March of Dimes Turns Away Reformer's Sponsorship

This World Week for Animals in Laboratories, PETA members, holding signs depicting disturbing images of primates in painful, invasive experiments and with the text, “This Is Vivisection. Don’t Let the March of Dimes Tell You Different,” will show up at the March of Dimes’ WalkAmerica fundraisers to hand out stickers that read, “MarchOfCrimes.com,” and ask walkers to earmark their donations for non-animal testing programs—ones guaranteed to help babies, not hurt animals. Concerned parents who are PETA members are demanding that the March of Dimes follow the lead of progressive health charities like Easter Seals that no longer test on animals. There will be more than 200 protests at WalkAmerica events nationwide over the next month.

Most WalkAmerica volunteers don’t realize that the March of Dimes has funded experimenters who have sewn cats’ eyes shut, implanted wires into the uteruses of pregnant monkeys, cut open the skulls of ferrets and injected chemicals directly into their brains, and administered cocaine, nicotine, and alcohol to pregnant rats even though the harmful effects of these substances on developing fetuses are well known. Other charities, such as Easter Seals and Birth Defect Research for Children, fund only life-saving projects rather than wasting donations on outdated animal experiments. Many corporations, including Kmart—the March of Dimes’ largest donor—Sara Lee, and Publix supermarkets, now earmark their contributions for direct care, community education, and prevention.
